Russia has launched an attack by armed forces on Ukraine and the event has sent shockwaves around the world. Indian markets were not immune to this and saw a massive sell-off on Thursday ahead of the F&O expiry. Today, Nifty broke the significant 16600 support level and witnessed significant selling pressure in line with global markets. We believe volatility will remain elevated due to an external shock and expect the March series to show further negative bias. Although the bias is bearish, we await derivatives data to set objective levels before taking a strong position from here. Investors can use further deep corrections to buy/average buy in uncertain times and traders to define risk.
At the close, the Sensex was down 2,702.15 points at 54,529 and the nifty was down 815 points at 16,248. All nifty stocks ended in the red, with Tata Motors, IndusInd Bank, UPL, Grasim Indusries and Adani Ports being the biggest losers. All sector indices ended down 3-8%, while BSE mid-cap and small-cap indices lost over 5% each.

Nifty had tested the crucial 16800 support yesterday from where it started to recover. Today nifty opened a gap  and tried to continue the recovery process. However, it failed to sustain above the main hourly moving averages and turned negative at the end of the day. Regarding the price pattern, Nifty has formed a triangle pattern on the daily chart and is consolidating within the pattern. The bottom of the pattern comes in at 16,800 while the top comes in at 17,300. Nifty is expected to see further consolidation in this range that may resume the larger uptrend.

Today, the market continued its unprecedented move, correcting 2% in the pre-open and later recovering in the 2nd half. Investors are advised to exercise caution in their trades. We expect small and mid-caps to lead the market recovery after the end of the Russia-Ukraine crisis. For nifty, 17000 will act as a very strong support on its break we might see 16900 levels and if this level is also broken then the next stop will be around 16850 levels. On the upside 17160 will act as a very strong resistance, if nifty breaks above these levels the next stop will be around 17225 which if broken will take the markets to the 17300 level.
